Web Databases there are two basic types of web databases static and dynamic.

Dynamic Databases applications best suited for complex sites with large selection of parts, services etc. Allows clients to query the database for technical information, pricing, availability photos just about anything you could think of. This is what is used for a full ecommerce solutions high level security, click here for more info.

Static Databases applications best suited for less complex sites, frequently updated but no ecommerce requirement. Database would be modified off line and changes uploaded onto the server - lower level security. Click here for more information.

Programing Environment the next consideration is the choice of database program to use. This will be largely depend on the above documentation and also the operating system / environment that the program will run, ie win95, NT, unix etc. The expected number of concurrent users must also be considered eg, access database has a response time of approx 10 sec and will start to show performance degradation at a level of 3-4 concurrent users. Please note that this level of activity would not be achieved by most sites until the number of unique hits / day reached a level of approx 3000 visitors / day.

The two most common databases that drive much of the worlds dynamic websites is Micrsoft's SQL Server and Oracle databases.
